California Gov. Gavin Newsom has signed a controversial new law expanding protections for workers at immigration nonprofits.

Republicans have dubbed it the “Stop Nick Shirley Act,” arguing it could chill fraud investigations. Supporters say it simply protects workers from doxxing and threats and does not prevent legitimate journalism.
