State lawmakers will be back to session in a little more than three months, and some are already working on new legislation.

A set of bills, soon to be introduced by Senator Adrian Cortes (D-Battle Ground), aims to add new requirements for school district leadership and promote safe learning environments for students.

Looking ahead to next session, Cortes plans to introduce a bill to establish certification requirements for superintendents to ensure they have training in teaching. If the bill does pass and is signed into law, superintendents would be required to have that new certification by the start of 2029.

The second bill aims to increase transparency in public schools, Cortes says, to protect students from abuse and neglect.

The legislation would require public schools to submit an annual declaration stating whether they are aware of student misconduct involving a school employee.

Prefiling for legislation ahead of the 2027 session opens on December 7th; that's when Cortes expects to file both bills.
