A California couple has been charged with murder over the fatal shooting of their son-in-law in a public park, mere days before a bitter divorce case was scheduled between the man and the couple's daughter.
Jonathan McKinsey, 40, a New York Times Games engineering executive who was found fatally shot in a California parking lot had previously accused his mother-in-law of using anti-transgender slurs against him and one of his children, according to court records.
McKinsey was found dead Saturday in Dublin, California, after a sergeant driving by spotted a man lying on the ground, police said. At about the same time, dispatchers began receiving multiple 911 calls reporting a shooting.
Shili Chen and Shouyong Zhang, both 77, McKinsey’s in-laws, were arrested on murder charges after witnesses quickly identified them.

Court records obtained by The Mercury News detailed that McKinsey and his wife, Candice Jang, had obtained protection orders against each other. Jang alleged McKinsey hit one of their sons and left a “very large bruise the shape of a handprint” on his face. She also accused him of assaulting her.
McKinsey, meanwhile, alleged years of abuse by Jang, including an accusation that she struck him with a frying pan in 2013, the outlet reported. He also accused Chen of verbally abusing his transgender identity and one of his children, calling them “disgusting queer” and a “pervert.”
McKinsey filed for divorce in December 2025, and a status hearing had been scheduled for Oct. 10. Police have not publicly identified a motive.
A New York Times spokesperson confirmed to Fox News Digital that McKinsey was the company’s director of engineering for games and had worked there since January 2023.
