Nearly 1.7 million pounds of brown and powdered sugar distributed in Ohio and seven other states have been recalled because the products may contain undeclared wheat kernels.
United Sugar Producers and Refiners of Minneapolis initiated the voluntary recall Aug. 19. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration classified it as a Class II recall earlier this week, meaning use of or exposure to the products could cause temporary or medically reversible health consequences, while the chance of serious harm is remote.
The recall covers light brown sugar and powdered sugar sold under the United, Crystal Sugar and Good & Gather brands. The products were distributed in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Texas.
Affected items were sold in consumer packages and commercial-sized bags. Consumers should check the batch code on the package against the FDA recall listing. Listed codes include MHD26223 through MHD26229; certain powdered-sugar products may also carry batch code MHD26230.
The FDA said the products may contain wheat kernels. People with wheat allergies or sensitivities should not consume the recalled sugar.
Consumers can return affected products to the place of purchase for a refund or throw them away. The recall remains ongoing.
