Two U.S. Navy aviators safely ejected from their aircraft during landing operations aboard the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower off the Virginia coast Monday, while four sailors on the carrier were injured, the Navy said.
The aviators, assigned to Carrier Air Wing 3, ejected after what the Navy described as a “mishap” during aircraft recovery operations. Search-and-rescue personnel recovered both aviators and returned them to the carrier, where they were being evaluated by medical staff.
Four sailors aboard the ship were also receiving medical care. One sailor was taken to a hospital in the Norfolk, Virginia, area with non-life-threatening injuries, according to the Navy.
The Navy did not identify the two-seat aircraft involved, say what happened to the plane or provide a possible cause of the incident. It did not immediately provide additional details.
The USS Dwight D. Eisenhower is a nuclear-powered, Nimitz-class aircraft carrier commissioned in 1977.
