Kevin Reddington, Lindsay Clancy's attorney, mentioned U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace by name while arguing with the prosecution over public statements he's made since the early September mistrial.

Mace and Reddington have traded barbs frequently since Sept. 4, with the three-term member of Congress claiming Clancy should be executed for killing her three children in 2023. During a Sept. 29 status conference, Reddington's frustration with the national attention the case has brought poured into the courtroom. He claimed he was "so tired" of hearing the prosecution state that he was attacking the holdout juror in the trial.

"Every comment I have made has been in reaction to people from Donald Trump on down to Nancy Mace down to [Ted] Cruz, calling for her execution," Reddington said in court. "I have responded to these outlandish comments. I just want to say that, Judge."

Reddington's comments followed his argument that prosecutors failed to prove Clancy killed her three kids. It was a remarkable change after a lengthy trial where no one disputed that she strangled her children with exercise bands on Jan. 24, 2023. Reddington repeated to Judge William Sullivan that prosecutors had not presented evidence at the trial that showed she killed Cora, Dawson and Callan in their home in the Boston suburb of Duxbury.

The original case was declared a mistrial in early September after a single juror stopped the 12-member group from unanimously deciding Clancy was not guilty by way of insanity. In the weeks that have followed, several jurors, including the holdout, have spoken with the media to provide their reasoning. The holdout juror's attorney said he wants “justice for the children” and his own privacy, an attorney representing him told reporters after the hearing Tuesday.

As public interest in the murder trial exploded, politicians from the president down have weighed in on Clancy's innocence or guilt. Rep. Mace has routinely written on social media and said publicly that Clancy deserves to be executed for a crime a jury has yet to find her guilty of committing. On Tuesday, Mace, again, doubled down after Reddington's courtroom explosion.

"Kevin Reddington defends a killer. We are calling for the execution of one," Mace said in a statement. "Lindsay Clancy's attorney wants everyone to believe he never targeted the lone holdout juror. His own words say otherwise. He blamed the juror for the mistrial. He called him 'that guy.' He put a target on his back."

Mace continued: "We would never hire an attorney with such a lapse in memory. Or judgment. Appreciated the shoutout in court this morning, Kevin, but we are not the same."

The prospect of a retrial is still unresolved. Judge Sullivan did not rule on the defense's request to declare Clancy not guilty. He did, however, urge Clancy's lawyers and the prosecution to prepare to discuss a date for a retrial when another hearing is held on Nov. 2.
