The 25-year-old dad was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder for the incident

KAKAMIGAHARA, Japan (WKRC) — A 25-year-old father was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after police said he threw his two young daughters from the sixth-floor balcony of their apartment, authorities in central Japan said.

The girls, ages 1 and 4, survived after landing on mats placed below the building by emergency crews. Both were conscious when they were taken to a hospital, and their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, according to Japanese media reports from Japan Today, Nagoya TV News and CBC Television News from Japan.

Police said the incident happened around 4:20 a.m. Saturday in Kakamigahara, in Japan’s Gifu Prefecture.

Authorities had been called to the apartment late Friday after the girls’ mother reported that her husband had forcibly grabbed her arm during an argument, according to Japan Today. Police went to the building, but the man allegedly refused to cooperate and locked himself inside the apartment.

As officers prepared to enter the unit, police said Tomokazu Miura allegedly threw the children from the balcony. He was arrested at the scene.

Security-camera video shared by Japanese television outlets appears to show the children falling from the building.

Authorities are continuing to investigate. Japanese media reported Miura had not spoken to investigators following his arrest.
