A fatal six-vehicle crash involving a motorcycle blocked multiple lanes of southbound Interstate 5 near Everett Mall Way on Tuesday afternoon, according to the Washington State Patrol.
Trooper Kelsey Harding initially said the three left lanes of southbound I-5 at milepost 189 were blocked because of a multi-vehicle serious-injury collision. Minutes later, Harding confirmed the crash was fatal.
According to a Washington State Patrol press memo, a motorcycle traveling southbound in Lane 3 struck five other vehicles before the rider collided with a sixth vehicle in the HOV lane. The motorcycle and the sixth vehicle came to rest on the left shoulder, while the remaining vehicles stopped in the HOV lane and Lane 3.
The rider was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported.
The crash involved five passenger vehicles and one motorcycle. WSP listed speed as the cause of the collision. It has not been determined whether drugs or alcohol played a role.
Drivers were urged to use alternate routes and expect significant delays. There was no estimated time for the roadway to fully reopen Tuesday evening.
