Improvised explosive devices found inside an impounded vehicle in Pacific County were safely neutralized after deputies and the Washington State Patrol Bomb Squad moved the items to a beach for a controlled detonation, authorities said on Tuesday.
The Pacific County Sheriff’s Office said the incident began on Aug. 31, 2026.
Deputies were alerted by a local towing company after staff discovered multiple improvised explosive devices inside an impounded vehicle at the company’s facility.
PCSO supervisors and neighboring law enforcement agencies were notified, and the Washington State Patrol Bomb Squad was requested to respond. Deputies established a safety perimeter around the facility and maintained surveillance until bomb technicians arrived.
Using X-ray analysis, WSP Bomb Squad technicians confirmed the items were active improvised explosive devices. Bomb Squad personnel determined dry local conditions made rendering or detonating the devices on-site unsafe and advised that the items be transported to a nearby beach location for controlled disposal.
Washington State Parks was notified to coordinate and help secure public safety along the shoreline, according to the release.
At about 11 p.m., PCSO deputies and WSP Bomb Squad personnel arrived at the Seaview beach approach, cleared the area of bystanders, and conducted a controlled detonation “without incident."
The sheriff’s office said information about the suspect and the vehicle involved has been provided to the WSP Bomb Squad, and the investigation is ongoing.
