Street racing on a busy University Place roadway ended with two arrests and both vehicles impounded after a deputy said he saw two drivers start a high-speed race.

On Sept. 8 around 9:30 p.m., a University Place deputy was conducting a speed emphasis on Bridgeport Way W when he saw two cars slow alongside each other and then accelerate together at high speeds. The deputy attempted a traffic stop, but it was unsuccessful.

After checking the area, the deputy later spotted both unlicensed cars parked side-by-side in a parking lot and determined there was probable cause for reckless driving and street racing.

Two 25-year-old men were arrested for reckless driving and street racing and booked into the Pierce County Jail.

Authorities said Washington’s street racing laws adopted in January 2024 require any vehicle involved in street racing to be held for a 72-hour impound and allow vehicles to be seized under search warrants to gather evidence. On a second street racing offense, the vehicle is subject to forfeiture.

The deputy submitted a search warrant that was approved, and a suspect’s dash cam was removed as evidence, authorities said. After reviewing the video, investigators said the dash cam showed the suspects alongside each other, racing at a high rate of speed, including one vehicle accelerating up to 107 mph in a 35-mph zone.

Both vehicles were later impounded with the 72-hour hold.

“We love cool cars, but our county streets are not the place to race,” authorities said. “The full-meal-deal will be given to all those who put our community in danger with street racing on public roadways.”
