A Salmonella outbreak linked to broccoli sprouts has now sickened 22 people across four states, including 16 people in Washington, according to the Washington State Department of Health.

Health officials said additional illnesses have been identified since the outbreak was first announced earlier this month. Leftover broccoli sprouts collected from a person who became sick also tested positive for the outbreak strain of Salmonella.

The outbreak has been linked to broccoli sprouts produced by Evergreen Fresh Sprouts LLC of Idaho, according to health officials.

Washington and Montana public health officials began investigating the outbreak after people became infected with the same strain of Salmonella.

When the Washington State Department of Health first announced the investigation Sept. 2, 13 people in Washington had become sick, with illnesses beginning between July 7 and Aug. 18.

Of the 12 people interviewed at the time, eight reported eating sprouts from Evergreen Fresh Sprouts. Seven reported eating broccoli sprouts, while officials did not know what type of sprouts the eighth person ate.

The sprouts were purchased from grocery stores, food co-ops, and restaurants. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a food safety alert about the outbreak, while the Food and Drug Administration is also investigating.

The Washington State Public Health Laboratory has also been testing sprout samples from Evergreen Fresh Sprouts and other suppliers.

Health officials said this outbreak appears to be unrelated to a recent multistate Salmonella and E. coli outbreak linked to alfalfa sprouts produced by Everything Sprouts LLC in Minnesota.
