As the nation marks the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, U.S. Rep. Rick Larsen of Washington’s 2nd Congressional District is reflecting on how that day reshaped his early months in office and the responsibilities that followed.
Larsen, who was eight months into his first term in Congress at the time, was asked to look back on where he was and what he understood in the moment he realized the United States was under attack.
He was also asked whether Sept. 11 changed how he viewed the responsibility of serving as a “brand-new congressman,” and how the experience influenced his approach to the job.
The conversation also turned to issues facing veterans in northwest Washington. Larsen was asked about concerns he continues to hear during his “Conversations with Veterans” forums, including challenges for post-9/11 veterans related to the VA backlog and employment transitions.
He was also asked to reflect on the national unity that followed the attacks and where that unity stands 25 years later.
