King County prosecutors on Thursday charged a Renton man with first-degree murder, first-degree burglary and first-degree assault, each with deadly weapon enhancements, in connection with the fatal stabbing of his mother and the stabbing of a Renton police officer.
Christopher J. Mott, 42, is charged with the premeditated killing of Colleen McCue, 80, on Monday, first-degree burglary for allegedly unlawfully entering her apartment building while armed with a knife and assaulting her, and first-degree assault for allegedly stabbing Officer Justin Kauppila in the face with a knife the following day.
Prosecutors also allege the homicide was an act of domestic violence because McCue was a family member.
According to charging documents, prosecutors allege Mott killed McCue inside her apartment at the Cedar River Terrace Apartments in Renton after forcing his way into the building by smashing the front glass doors with a parking sign.
The documents say officers initially responded to reports of damage at the apartment building shortly before midnight on Monday.
While investigating the shattered entrance, officers encountered a man later identified as Mott, who ran when they attempted to contact him.
During the pursuit, prosecutors allege Mott slashed Officer Kauppila across the face with a knife before he was subdued with a Taser and arrested.
Court records say Mott told officers after his arrest, "I just fucking killed my mom," followed by, "And it felt great." At the time, officers were unaware anyone had been killed.
After reviewing surveillance footage and learning Mott was the son of Cedar River Terrace resident Colleen McCue, officers went to her apartment and found her dead inside with multiple stab wounds, according to the probable cause statement.
An autopsy later determined McCue died from multiple stab wounds to the chest, neck and face, including injuries that severed her left carotid artery and perforated her right lung. The death was ruled a homicide.
Charging documents allege Kauppila suffered severe injuries, including an orbital fracture, a puncture wound to his right eyeball, a severed upper lip and multiple facial lacerations requiring surgery. Prosecutors said it remains unknown whether he will regain sight in his right eye.
Prosecutors are seeking to keep Mott's bail at $5 million, arguing he poses a significant threat to public safety based on the allegations in the case.
