A multicar crash on Interstate 5 in Tacoma shut down all northbound lanes for hours on Friday after a vehicle struck a light pole and crossed into oncoming traffic.

All lanes reopened shortly before 7:30 a.m.

Troopers said the crash happened near South 72nd Street just before 2 a.m. and involved eight to 10 vehicles, including a semi-truck.

According to troopers, a car traveling northbound hit a light post, then crossed all southbound lanes before ending up in a ditch.

No major injuries were reported, but some vehicles were heavily damaged or destroyed.

The northbound lanes were completely blocked, and one lane was closed southbound.

All lanes reopened more than 5 hours later.
