Officers and medical personnel provided aid, but the man died at the scene, according to police.
A man was shot and killed by Federal Way police Thursday evening after officers said he pointed a gun at them outside The Commons mall.
Multiple people called 911 around 6:40 p.m. to report a man armed with a gun who was pointing it at people in the mall parking lot, according to the Federal Way Police Department.
Police said one caller reported the man said he was waiting for officers to arrive.
The man was described as being in his 20s or 30s.
Federal Way police said officers arrived a short time later and attempted to contact the man. Police said the man pointed a weapon at the officers, who then opened fire and struck him.
Officers and medical personnel provided aid, but the man died at the scene, according to police.
No officers or bystanders were injured.
The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave in accordance with department policy.
The Valley Independent Investigation Team will conduct an independent investigation into the shooting. Federal Way police said the department will not be involved in the investigation and is prohibited from releasing additional information about the incident.
