The back-to-school spending numbers are just staggering!

According to the National Retail Federation (NRF), families with students in elementary through high school spend an average of more than $860 on items each year. Nearly $300 is spend on electronics, followed by clothing accessories, and shoes, the NRF reports.

And the numbers are even higher for college students - more than $1,400 spent each year! Electronics remain the top spending category, followed by dorm or apartment furnishings, clothing and accessories, food, and personal care items, the NRF reports.

That's why thrifting can be a great option to save a few bucks where you can.

Evergreen Goodwill says you can find just about anything you need on your list.

"You might have to come twice, if you're looking for something specific. But we've seen so many amazing backpacks. Like here for the younger crowd, the unicorns or Spider Man. Of course, the super heroes are really big again this year. It is Seattle, so we brought a rain coat. Rain boots. And then we have the lunches boxes and the water bottles. I mean there are so many styles - kids know exactly which water bottle and lunch box it has to be this season. So, you'll find those," said Micha Goebig, Evergreen Goodwill Public Relations & Communications Specialist, while speaking to KOMO News Anchor Steve McCarron.

Evergreen Goodwill also has a lot of new back-to-school supplies, including pencils, pens, pads of paper, and notebooks, Goebig added.
