Sunday, September 20, 2026, kicks off Child Passenger Safety Awareness Week - a critical time for parents and guardians to make sure they safely know how to properly install a car seat in their vehicle.

The week is an annual educational campaign held during the third week of September to highlight the importance of correctly securing children in age- and size-appropriate car seats, booster seats, and seat belts, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

One of the reasons the week is so important is car crashes are a leading cause of death for children between the ages of 1 to 13. If and when a crash happens, car seats and booster seats can provide protection for infants and children, according to the King County Sheriff's Office.

Community Service Officer Denise Contreras showed ARC Seattle co-anchor Steve McCarron how to properly install a car seat in a vehicle.

If you live in the cities of Burien or SeaTac, you can schedule an appointment to learn how to properly install a car seat or booster seat. Click here if you live in other portions of King County.

Watch ARC Seattle weekdays from 7 to 8 a.m. and 10 to 11 p.m. on KUNS, The CW Network.
