Hurricane remnants can linger long after they leave the tropics, creating trouble hundreds, even thousands, of miles away.

Hurricane remnants can linger long after they leave the tropics, creating trouble hundreds, even thousands, of miles away.

Dashcam video from Nebraska of a semi jackknifing in the rain from the remnants of Hurricane Polo shows just how dangerous heavy rain can make the highways. Scary!

The best strategy to avoid getting involved in a situation like this in the first place is to slow down well below the posted speed limit when roads are wet, leave extra following distance, and avoid standing water.

If your vehicle begins to hydroplane or lose traction, the goal is to get the tires to reconnect with the road.

Avoid sudden braking, acceleration, or sharp steering. Keep the wheel steady, ease off the accelerator, and make gentle steering corrections in the direction you want the vehicle to go.

Once traction returns, slow down gradually.
