The rats don't own this city, we do! On Wednesday night, some members of a DC community got the chance to start learning how to take the city back.

We've been reporting extensively on the booming rodent population and efforts to curb it, and now there's a new program called DC Rat Rangers. At their inaugural Community Rat Walk, they went through a neighborhood in the area of 20th and I St NE, in Ward 5.

Along the way, attendees heard from anthrozoologist Holly Gerberich and rodentologist Gerard Brown.

The pair of experts covered a wide range of educational points:

  • How to keep your home off their real estate radar
  • How little food it takes to keep a rat fat and happy
  • How to spot signs of rodent activity before they spot your apartment
  • Why we are still fighting this war on rats (and the rats are winning)

7News joined the group for the rat walk, and, unsurprisingly, rats were the star of the show. Our photographer saw dozens of the rodents along the way.

You can watch the rat walk below.

More walks are planned over the coming weeks, led by volunteers with local nonprofits.
