Considering the wide range of terrible outcomes that are possible in relation to a hip injury in the NFL, the Seahawks are feeling fortunate when it comes to the case of Sam Darnold.
No fracture; worst-case scenario averted.
"It’s been positive news, so right now we’re working through the extent of the injury and then putting a plan in place to get back rocking and rolling," Macdonald said Thursday afternoon.
"The silver lining is we have some extra time here. We’ll get things back up and running on Monday. We’ll be back. It’ll be a football Monday and a calendar Monday. Hopefully by then we’ll have an accurate picture of (the) plan of attack and what we’ll do that week," he added.
In short, nothing's been ruled out.
Macdonald's next update will come Monday.
Still, with a game against the Arizona Cardinals coming up and with the way Drew Lock played on Wednesday night, the Hawks are very comfortable rolling with Drew if they need to.
"I thought Drew played great. It’s awesome. Ball’s never in jeopardy. Was aggressive when he needed to be. Operationally, we’ll make some strides, but that’s on everybody. He did a great job," Macdonald said, adding, “He’s been tremendous. He operates like a starter does in terms of preparation. The chemistry and the personality of our quarterback room is one that is very supportive of each other and also trying to bring out the best in one another. Drew (Lock) provides a cool, confident, loose, and 'focusedness’ to the whole equation, which you need – you need that. On top of that, since he’s got here, he’s played great."
It speaks volumes of the culture at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center; here's a team that last lost its starting quarterback, was down 10-0, and committed a plethora of penalties.
And it speaks to the togetherness of the defending world champs.
As Coach told me Thursday, “I have a lot of respect for our guys. The rest of our coaching staff feels the same way. It shows up on tape. You felt it throughout the course of the game. I like the poise, and there’s a confidence that we’re going to find a play and then we’re going to try and find another play. Keep it that simple and the things you can control throughout a game, that way you won’t get caught up in all the other stuff. There’s an emotional side too that you want to pick Sam (Darnold) up, and you also want to be there for Drew (Lock) as well. I thought that was cool to see the guys come to Drew’s side and have their back, especially on defense, I thought that was awesome.”
The Seahawks will take the weekend to rest and recoup before diving back into work Monday ahead of their next game, Sept. 20 at Arizona.
After facing off with the Cardinals, Seattle travels to D.C. to play the Commanders before finally coming back home to host the Chargers Oct. 4 and the 49ers on Oct. 11.
