On Sunday, Seahawks General Manager John Schneider talked with local reporters as the Seahawks had to, like every other NFL team, trim their roster from 90 play

On Sunday, Seahawks General Manager John Schneider talked with local reporters as the Seahawks had to, like every other NFL team, trim their roster from 90 players down to 53.

Montorie Foster, Jr.

The Seahawks story of the preseason had to be Montorie Foster, Jr.

The man who was waived at last year's training camp after an injury joined the working world as a substitute teacher and got his real estate license.

The Seahawks called him back on December 30th; Montorie joined the team, and got a ring.

During this training camp, his story made for great content on Hard Knocks and endeared him to the entire country.

Of course, he's so much more than that.

Montorie made big-time plays catching, blocking, and even on special teams.

He made himself undeniable, and the Seahawks rewarded him with a spot on the 53-man sorter.

"Yeah, really proud of him, and his teammates, and obviously, his position coaches. It’s hard to remember a player at the receiver position that has improved as quickly as he has. I told Jax (Jaxon Smith-Njigba) that I felt like he just took his film and completely studied it, or just followed him around all spring or something. His special team’s stuff has been really nice too, so he’s done a great job. It was pretty funny that we had the Kansas City local TV on, and they were like, ‘Montorie Foster is back there to return the punt. That guy is a dangerous punt returner.’ I was like, he literally doesn’t do that. He’s just starting, but if he can do that, great, as a safety punt returner, gunner, and hold-up guy, that would be fantastic," Schneider said.

Negotiating with Big Cat during ownership change

Earlier this week, the Seahawks extended star defensive lineman Leonard Williams with a new three-year deal.

Of course, a big contract like that can be unique during an ownership change.

But for Big Cat, as integral as he is to this lineup? There really wasn't a question, according to Schneider.

“That one was in limbo. It was right in the middle. It took a minute with that, but Joey (Laine) did a great job of just sticking with it. Joey Laine did a great job of continuing the conversations, and finally we were able to get to a spot about a week and a half ago where we felt very close. Regardless of the ownership group, Leonard Williams is a game-changer, and it was a no-brainer.”

About that new ownership family

Sunday marked the first time Schneider spoke publicly since the ownership transition from the Allen trust to the Khosla family.

So far, so good as they get to know one another.

“Yeah, just understanding what is important to them and the family. They’re excited. They want to support, and they want to learn. It’s just going to be very different, so we’re all going to be learning each other as we go through what our cadences are. Yes, they want to support and help in any way they can. They want to win, and they want to dominate, it’s pretty cool" Schneider said.

Of course, the Khosla family is renowned for their prowess in the AI world. It's actually something that, in time, could benefit the Seahawks in a competitive way.

“We’ve discussed it with them several times. When they came in and the groups were coming through. Obviously, we did our research on the different groups, and it was really exciting to figure out if we want to be the franchise of the future, where could we take this thing? We have really smart people, and we have the bandwidth to be foundational with it. To have that come in and be able to just help us take it to another level in the medical field, scouting, coaching, or wherever, we’re going to do whatever we possibly can to just crush it with those people. We’ve talked to them several times about it, and I think it’s just a really exciting thing," Schneider said.

The 2026 season opener is set for September 9, against the New England Patriots.
