Chants of “From the river to the sea” were heard at recent Cornell University Young Democratic Socialists of America events featuring Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and left-wing Twitch streamer Hasan Piker, as new polling shows most registered voters view the Democratic Socialists of America unfavorably.
Members of Cornell’s Young Democratic Socialists of America could be heard chanting “From the river to the sea” at an event over the weekend featuring Rep. Ocasio-Cortez. In a video from the event, co-chairs led the chant, calling out Cornell as a “capitalist institution” while also saying it “is controlled by CEO trustees that are profiting off of genocide and war.”
When she took the stage, Ocasio-Cortez did not address the chant, but criticized the university, saying, “Cornell, if I'm not mistaken, actually has an 'F' rating on free speech matters and issues.” She also said, “We see how the financial relationship can govern the rules of an institution.”
Piker was also in attendance during a similar chant, while appearing at a Cornell event last week organized by the university’s Student for Justice in Palestine and Young Democratic Socialists of America movements. Video from that event shows the chant call-and-response between the host and the crowd, including “From the river to the sea” and “Palestine will be free.”
The chants come as a new Fox News poll found that 55% of registered voters hold an unfavorable view of the DSA, while 30% view the group positively.
Axios also reported that several swing-state Democrats are distancing themselves from Ocasio-Cortez, including Montana House candidate Sam Forstag, who reportedly removed her endorsement from his website.
I don't intend to be having a lot of folks from out of state campaigning with me over these next 40 days,” Forstag told the outlet.
The National News Desk has reached out to Rep. Ocasio-Cortez and Cornell’s Young Democratic Socialists of America chapter with questions about both events.
