Uvalde CISD will transfer the Robb Elementary campus to the City of Uvalde, opening the door for a permanent memorial and community park at the site.

UVALDE, Texas — Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District will transfer the Robb Elementary campus to the City of Uvalde, opening the door for a permanent memorial and community park at the site where 19 students and two teachers were killed in the 2022 shooting.

UCISD Board President Jesse Rizo announced the plan during a recent board meeting. Rizo’s niece, Jackie Cazares, was among those killed at Robb Elementary.

In the coming months, Uvalde CISD will enter an agreement to transfer ownership of the Robb Elementary campus and the land to the City of Uvalde for an agreed-upon amount,” Rizo said.

The district did not disclose the proposed sale price or say when the agreement could be finalized.

State lawmakers set aside $10 million in the latest state budget to convert the Robb campus into a memorial and community park. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department will steward the funding.

Transferring the campus to the city is one of the first steps toward using that money for the project. Rizo said a committee will be formed to help guide the process.

District and city leaders say input from victims’ families and the broader Uvalde community will be central to deciding what the site ultimately becomes.

We look forward to seeing this memorial take shape as a lasting tribute to the 21 angels and a resource our entire community can lean on for years to come,” Rizo said.

Former Uvalde mayor and current State Rep. Don McLaughlin attended the school board meeting and said the move has been a long time coming.

“It's going to be a long road that we have to still travel. But together, we can succeed down that road,” McLaughlin told board members.

It was also an emotional step for UCISD Trustee Natalie Arias, who said Robb Elementary was where she decided she wanted to become a teacher.

“I would love to see this become a place that we can all be, we can continue to be proud of in terms of who we are and where we come from. While also honoring and respecting the lives that were lost,” Arias said.

The Robb Elementary campus has remained empty since the May 24, 2022, shooting. Although calls to demolish the building began soon after the attack, the campus has remained standing while the site continues to be preserved as evidence.

Former Uvalde CISD Police Chief Pete Arredondo is awaiting a February trial on child-endangerment charges connected to the law enforcement response to the shooting.

In early 2026, former UCISD Officer Adrian Gonzales was acquitted of child-endangerment charges following a trial in Corpus Christi.
