The reciprocal lists, released Monday, cover 1,619 categories of U.S. exports to China.
The United States and China are cutting tariffs on roughly $30 billion worth of each other’s goods, a new step in easing trade tensions days after Chinese President Xi Jinping met with President Donald Trump in Washington.
The reciprocal lists, released Monday, cover 1,619 categories of U.S. exports to China — including agricultural products, coal, timber, personal care items and medical equipment — and 77 categories of Chinese goods headed to the U.S., such as fireworks, tableware, glassware, Christmas ornaments and soccer balls.
More than 90% of the products will receive “most-favored-nation” tariff treatment, effectively removing country-specific duties, China’s Commerce Ministry said. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said the agreement focuses on “nonsensitive goods” that could benefit from more favorable tariff treatment.
The move could expand access for U.S. farmers, manufacturers and consumer brands in China while helping lower costs for American shoppers purchasing household goods and toys, according to U.S. officials and analysts. But strategically sensitive industries — including semiconductors, electric vehicles and batteries — were left out of the agreement.
The deal follows Trump and Xi’s first White House meeting since Xi’s 2015 state visit. The two countries also extended their broader trade truce last week through January, after U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods climbed as high as 145% last year.
Analysts said the agreement is a positive sign but may have a limited overall economic impact given the scale of trade between the two countries. U.S. exports to China totaled about $68 billion through the first seven months of the year, while Chinese exports to the U.S. reached roughly $270 billion in the first eight months, according to BNP Paribas Wealth Management.
Still, economists expect trade tensions to remain relatively contained through the end of the year as Trump and Xi prepare for additional meetings at the APEC summit in Shenzhen in November and the G20 summit in Florida in December.
