PHOENIX (WKRC) — An Arizona teen who reportedly caused thousands of dollars' worth of damage to a home while taking part in a dangerous social media trend has been arrested.
Police said the 14-year-old boy, who is not being named, and another juvenile suspect were taking part in the "door kick challenge," a viral social media trend in which participants kick in or bang on front doors of random homes and record it to share online. On Sept. 12, the juveniles pulled up to a home in Phoenix in a stolen Ford truck around 6:30 a.m., opened the gate, tried to conceal their faces, kicked the door in and ran. The home's Ring camera caught the incident, said police.
Per AZFamily, the home's door was custom-built and will need to be completely remade, which is estimated to cost around $10,000.
On Thursday, Phoenix Police said the 14-year-old boy had been arrested and was booked into the Durango Juvenile Detention Facility. The boy reportedly confirmed to police that the truck he and the other juvenile drove had been stolen from Scottsdale. Investigators say there is also evidence linking the boy to another stolen vehicle.
The boy is charged with criminal damage and unlawful use of transportation. There is no word on the second juvenile involved in the case.
