JACKSON, Tenn. (WKRC) — Police in Tennessee are investigating after they say a K-9 died after its handler left it in an outdoor kennel for 36 hours without water.
Madison County Sheriff Julian Wiser announced the news at a press conference Friday.
Wiser said 2 1/2-year-old K-9 Bart was found dead Sept. 19 inside his outdoor kennel by his handler earlier in September.
The sheriff said the heat index reached 101 degrees. A vet determined Bart had died from heat stroke due to severe dehydration.
“I can assure the community that a thorough investigation will be completed and that the findings will be forwarded to the district attorney’s office,” Wiser said.
Wiser also announced that the K-9 handler had been placed on administrative leave and has since resigned.
The handler’s name has not been released as investigators look into potential criminal charges.
