Some protesters chained themselves to Kroger's headquarters Wednesday morning.

CINCINNATI (WKRC) — Nine protesters were arrested Wednesday after some chained themselves to Kroger’s downtown headquarters and blocked access through the Court Street entrance, police said.

The demonstration was organized by Animal Equality, which is calling on Kroger to fulfill what the group says was a commitment to source only cage-free eggs by the end of 2025. Dozens of people gathered outside the headquarters, though not all of them were chained to the building.

Kroger said it respects peaceful protest but criticized tactics it said created safety concerns, releasing the following statement through a spokesperson:

"Kroger respects the right to peaceful protest and for people to make their voices heard. But extreme tactics that create safety concerns for our associates, visitors and neighbors cross a line. We are cooperating with local law enforcement as they respond to the situation and remain focused on keeping people safe.

We have met with and listened to leaders of this pressure campaign and have been clear about Kroger’s position to support animal welfare while ensuring our customers have affordable choices. Keeping food affordable and delivering value for our customers, particularly as families face higher costs, remains a core priority."
