A missionary from Nephi remains in critical condition after her family says she was struck by a driver while walking with her companion in Johnson City, Tenness

A missionary from Nephi remains in critical condition after her family says she was struck by a driver while walking with her companion in Johnson City, Tennessee.

Sister Addison Worwood, who is serving in the Tennessee Knoxville Mission, was critically injured Tuesday morning, her aunt, Kelly Gribbin, said Gribbin said Worwood and her missionary companion were crossing in a crosswalk when the driver did not see Worwood.

Worwood has been serving for about a year of her 18-month mission.

Her parents arrived in Tennessee on Wednesday afternoon and are now with their daughter, Gribbin said. Worwood’s mother provided a medical update that Gribbin shared with KUTV.

Worwood remains in critical condition after multiple brain surgeries to relieve pressure and stop a brain bleed, according to the update.

Surgeons removed a portion of her skull on one side to give her brain room to swell. Another section was repaired and secured with a titanium plate to help prevent further bleeding.

Worwood also suffered fractures to her face and hip that will require treatment after her neurological condition improves. Plastic surgeons repaired lacerations to her nose and face during one of the brain surgeries.

Doctors have been able to reduce her sedation, but Worwood remains on pain medication and a ventilator. Her mother said she can move her arms and legs but is not yet following commands.

Her blood pressure and heart rate are being closely monitored. Her family said the next 24 to 48 hours will be critical as she recovers from significant brain trauma.

Worwood is expected to remain in the surgical intensive care unit until she can breathe on her own and recovers further from the surgeries.

“We remain hopeful that she will continue to incrementally improve,” her mother said, thanking those who have offered prayers, fasting and support.

The Worwoods own The Bow Shop and 7 Woods Outdoors in Nephi, according to Gribbin.
