DPS has not released details about the nature of the alleged plot.
A 40-year-old man has been arrested after authorities received information about an alleged plot to carry out a violent attack on the Texas State Capitol on Thursday, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
DPS identified the suspect as Benny Caldera Jr., 40, of Converse.
The department said it received "credible information" on the evening of Tuesday, Sept. 29, about an individual planning a violent attack on the Capitol for Oct. 1.
DPS Criminal Investigations Division special agents worked through the night alongside the FBI and local law enforcement partners to investigate the threat.
At around 3 a.m. Wednesday, DPS SWAT arrested Caldera at his Converse residence, according to the department. He was transported to the Bexar County Jail and charged with felony terroristic threat against a public servant.
Gov. Greg Abbott addressed the arrest Wednesday, crediting state and federal authorities with stopping the alleged attack.
"Texas DPS and the FBI stopped a planned attack on the Texas Capitol," Abbott said in a post on X. "Texas will NOT tolerate threats of violence against our Capitol. Thank you, @TxDPS, for a job well done."
DPS has not released details about the nature of the alleged plot, how authorities learned about it, or what investigators believe Caldera planned to do.
DPS leadership notified Texas lawmakers about the threat and arrest Wednesday.
The Texas Capitol remains open during its regular operating hours, but DPS said it will maintain an increased security posture at the Capitol to protect employees, visitors and state officials.
The investigation remains ongoing, and DPS said no additional information was immediately available.
DPS is asking the public to report suspicious activity through iWatchTexas. The program is intended for reporting suspicious behavior that could be related to criminal or terrorist threats and is not intended for emergencies.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
