Police are responding to an active shooter situation Wednesday morning in Manassas, Virginia.

Two employees were killed and a third was injured after a coworker opened fire Wednesday at a United Rentals facility in Manassas, Virginia, before later turning the gun on himself during a standoff with police on I-81, according to local and state officials.

The shooter was identified as 37-year-old Marvin Grant from Charlotte, North Carolina. He died from a self-inflicted gunshot after a pursuit and standoff with Virginia State Police in Augusta County.

Manassas City police identified the two employees who died as Ricky Lamot, 48, and Christopher Serrano, 33. The third victim is hospitalized at Inova Fairfax Hospital in stable condition and is expected to survive, though police said he will need surgery.

Police Chief Doug Keen said Lamot was a devoted family man who coached youth football.

“Knowing his children are now fatherless, it hits home,” Keen said.

How the shooting unfolded

Authorities responded to the United Rentals on Wellington Road around 7 a.m. after multiple 911 callers reported an active shooter. A Prince William County sheriff’s deputy was first to arrive, followed soon after by Manassas City police officers.

Officers found three men, all employees of United Rentals, who had been shot.

Police said Grant, a coworker at the business, fled Northern Virginia in a gray Toyota with North Carolina plates. Detectives used cellphone technology and witness information to track him south on I-81 and alerted local agencies and state police.

Virginia State Police said its troopers were notified around 8:20 a.m. that Grant may have been in Rockingham County.

A trooper spotted Grant’s Toyota traveling south on I-81 near the 235-mile marker in Augusta County. Officials said the vehicle pulled into a rest area near the 232-mile marker, where troopers tried to stop it. Grant briefly got out of the vehicle, then got back inside and continued southbound on I-81, prompting a chase, state police said.

Near the 227-mile marker, Grant pulled over and got out of his vehicle with a gun pointed at his head, according to state police. A tactical team and negotiator responded.

But around 10:30 a.m., Grant suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Troopers did not use force.

Manassas City police said investigators believe Grant came to work Wednesday morning, told a coworker that “three people are going to die,” then pulled a handgun from his waistband and opened fire.

“Our working theory is that there was some kind of altercation that led to this,” Police Chief Doug Keen said. “While some may consider the case closed with the death of Mr. Grant, [it] brings no closure to this case.”

Two of the victims were in the business’s garage or bay area, police said. The third came from an office area and entered the garage. Police are reviewing surveillance video from inside the facility.

Investigators are also working to determine how long Grant had worked at the facility and whether he had recently been transferred there.
