The Seattle Mariners will have a new field manager in 2027 after the team decided Dan Wilson will not return to the role.

The Seattle Mariners will have a new field manager in 2027 after the team decided Dan Wilson will not return to the role.

Seattle Mariners President of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced the decision on Sunday, saying it came after conversations this week.

“Collectively we failed to meet our own expectations this season,” Dipoto said. “Dan and I both care deeply about this organization, these players, and the future of the Mariners. After much discussion it was concluded that a new direction is best for 2027 and beyond.”

Dipoto thanked Wilson for his time leading the club, noting the team’s postseason run in 2025.

“I want to thank Dan for his efforts over the past two years and specifically recognize his role in our club advancing to Game 7 of the ALCS in 2025,” Dipoto said.

Wilson, who has managed the team the past two years, said he appreciated the opportunity and expressed confidence in the roster despite the results this season.

“I’ve appreciated the opportunity to lead this team the past two years,” Wilson said. “While this season has not gone the way any of us expected, I’m proud that the players in the clubhouse showed up each day to try and compete and battle in each game they played. I’m confident that the 2026 season doesn’t accurately reflect the talent, passion and desire of our players and know that bright things are ahead for this group.”

Seattle Mariners Chairman & Managing Partner John Stanton also thanked Wilson and said the organization is interested in keeping him with the club in a different capacity.

“I want to add my thanks to Dan for the work he’s done as manager,” Stanton said. “I have also spoken with Dan and made it clear that we would like to keep him in our organization. I look forward to continued conversations as we work to identify a role in which we can continue to benefit from his experience and commitment to the Mariners and our community.”

The 2025-2926 season that began with championship expectations for the Seattle Mariners ended with historic highs and lows — and ultimately, a disappointing finish.

On Aug. 18, the Mariners suffered their worst loss in franchise history, falling 22-0 to the Milwaukee Brewers. The defeat also ensured Seattle would not improve on its 90-72 record from the previous season.

Less than a month later, the Mariners delivered a franchise-best margin of victory. On Sept. 12, Seattle beat the Oakland Athletics 19-1.

But the season continued to slide. On Sept. 15, the Mariners lost their 82nd game, clinching their first losing season since 2020 and their first in a full season since 2019.

On Sept. 24, the Mariners were officially eliminated from playoff contention. With expectations of competing for the franchise’s first championship, the season was largely considered a disappointment by the media.
