Construction is underway on a new playground in Tacoma’s North Slope Historic District, part of a broader effort by Parks Tacoma to replace four playgrounds this year.
On Monday, crews fenced off North Slope Historic Park at the corner of North 8th and North K streets to begin removing aging play equipment from the 0.23-acre park.
Plans for the new playground include round, covered swings that children can crawl inside and a small climbing structure with two slides. Parks Tacoma also plans to refresh the playground surfacing with ADA-compliant engineered wood fiber.
The $160,000 project is paid for by a voter-approved bond.
Parks Tacoma said more than 325 people provided input on the new playground for the pocket park, which originally opened in 2002. The agency said people asked it to maximize the small play area and emphasize nature-based play.
Construction is expected to be completed by fall and followed by an opening celebration.
Other playgrounds being designed and built this year are at Alderwood Park, Cloverdale Park and Lincoln Heights Park. Oakland Madrona’s new playground opened in January.
