Several people living in a home in Spanaway were able to escape a fire, but one person did not make it out.

At around 1 a.m. on Thursday, Pierce County Sheriff's Office deputies were dispatched to a house fire at the 3500 block of 253rd St. Ct. E in Spanaway.

Deputies arrived to find the house engulfed in flames.

Several other people were evacuated when deputies got to the scene, but they learned that a 68-year-old woman remained in the home.

She died in the fire.

The PCSO said the fire and death are part of an active investigation.
