Flags at Washington state agency facilities are being lowered to half-staff immediately to honor and remember Dolly Parton.
The legendary country music singer-songwriter passed away on Tuesday.
Gov. Bob Ferguspm said the action is being taken “pursuant to the Presidential Proclamation” and applies to Washington state and U.S. flags at all state agency facilities.
Flags should remain at half-staff until close of business or sunset on Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2026. Agencies were told to notify field offices and facilities statewide.
The directive also encourages other government entities, individuals, and businesses to join in the recognition.
Parton wrote hundreds of songs, including classics like "Jolene," "Coat of Many Colors" and "I Will Always Love You," that totaled more than 100 million worldwide sales and more than 1 billion online streams.
Parton was a generous philanthropist and successful businesswoman whose projects included a theme park in the Smoky Mountain foothills near her birthplace, as well as Imagination Library, which is a non-profit program that mails free, age-appropriate books every month to young children from birth until they turn five years old.
