One person is dead, and a Thurston County deputy was shot and injured Tuesday night while responding to a domestic violence call in Rainier.

Gunfire was exchanged between a suspect and Thurston County deputies during a domestic violence call at a home in Rainier, which led to a seven-hour standoff.

Deputies were advised that there was a dead body inside the home.

When deputies arrived at the home around 9:10 p.m. Tuesday, a resident at the scene, who appeared to be in crisis, was told to stay outside until medics responded. Instead, the resident ran inside and locked the doors, according to the Thurston County Sheriff's Office (TCSO).

When two deputies tried to force their way inside, shots were fired at them through the door. Neither deputy was hit.

One deputy returned gunfire. The second deputy sustained an "immobilizing leg injury" while retreating under fire, the TCSO said. That deputy was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

When a SWAT team responded, the suspect shot at deputies and their armored vehicles numerous times.

A TCSO sniper returned fire and hit the suspect.

The team then used armored vehicles to tear a hole in the home's bathroom, where the suspect was hiding.

Deputies were then able to communicate with the suspect, who eventually surrendered and was taken into custody with non-life-threatening injuries.

Washington State Patrol troopers, Yelm police officers, the Regional SWAT team, and medics responded.

At 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, TCSO Sheriff Sanders said a suspect, who had non-life-threatening injuries, was taken into custody.
