One person is dead and another has been arrested after a shooting early Saturday at a park in Brush Prairie, Washington, according to the Clark County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies were dispatched shortly after 1 a.m. on Aug. 15 to the Hockinson Meadows Community Park at 10910 Northeast 172nd Avenue after a report of an 18-year-old male with a single gunshot wound to the chest, the sheriff’s office said.
Brush Prairie is a small town in Washington State around a 30-minute-drive away from Portland, Oregon.
Several cars were leaving the area as deputies arrived along with Vancouver Police Department officers and American Medical Response personnel, the sheriff’s office said. AMR determined the 18-year-old male was dead at the scene.
Investigators believe a large group of people, mostly in their late teens, had gathered at the park. Witnesses reported that a handgun discharged while it was in the hands of 18-year-old James Gill, an acquaintance of the person who died, the sheriff’s office said. A Glock 17 handgun was recovered from the scene.
Gill was booked into the Clark County Jail on a charge of second-degree manslaughter, the sheriff’s office said.
The sheriff’s office said the case remains an active investigation and no additional information is being released.
KATU News has reached out to the Clark County Medical Examiner's Office to learn the identity of the victim as well as the cause and manner of death.
