Tacoma police shot and killed a man Sunday afternoon after responding to a reported domestic assault at South 8th Street and South Stevens Street.

Officers were sent to the home at about 2:38 p.m. and arrived at about 3:09 p.m. At about 3:56 p.m., officers reported shots fired at the scene.

What happened between the people in the home and police remains under investigation.

The Tacoma Police Department said officers rendered aid to the suspect until Tacoma Fire Department personnel arrived a short time later and pronounced him dead at the scene. The suspect was not identified in the information released.

Neighbor Jule Cruz said she heard the gunshots inside the home.

“I think we were in shock at first, because we didn’t know what was going on,” said Cruz. “I would say it sounded like about 10 shots, which was quite a lot, and even though it was like inside the house, it was really loud.”

Cruz said the neighbors had been nice to her and her brother.

The Pierce County Force Investigation Team and the Washington State Office of Independent Investigations responded to the scene. The Office of Independent Investigations will lead the investigation into the officer-involved shooting. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call 564-250-1200.

Police said the involved officer was not injured and will be placed on administrative leave in accordance with department policy.
