A standoff inside an emergency room in Bonney Lake ended around noon Friday when a man who was reportedly making threats with a gun turned the weapon on himself.
The incident began around 9:20 a.m. when the man entered the MultiCare ER on State Route 410 and started making threats, Bonney Lake Police Chief Mark Berry said.
The hospital immediately went into lockdown as Bonney Lake police officers and Pierce County Sheriff's Office deputies responded.
"Officers moved to contain the situation, slow it down, and begin the process of negotiation," he said.
Due to the standoff, patients in the hospital had to be evacuated and taken to other facilities.
“They were in there for like emergency situations, and they were having SWAT guys escort them out and getting into different ambulances to go to other hospitals to get the care they needed," witness Rick Bedwell told KOMO News. “I’ve never seen anything like that so close; it was like a movie for sure.”

Around noon, Berry said the man shot himself and SWAT officers raced in and detained him. Paramedics were escorted inside the facility and started treating the man.
He was then taking to a waiting ambulance to be transported to another hospital for treatment. His condition was not released.
In a statement, MultiCare said all staff and patients are safe and that no injuries have been reported.
"We are currently responding to a security incident in the MultiCare Bonney Lake Emergency Department. All staff and patients are safe, and there are no reported injuries," the statement said. "Bonney Lake Police are on site and working with a negotiator. The safety and well-being of our patients, staff, and community remain our highest priorities. We are closely coordinating with law enforcement and will share additional information when available."
The hospital said the Bonney Lake Emergency Department was closed and not accepting patients during the standoff.
The Bonney Lake Emergency Department will reopen at 7:30 pm, according to hospital officials.
Patients requiring emergency care should seek services at the nearest available emergency department or call 911 in the event of a medical emergency, the hospital said.
Authorities have not released additional information about the suspect or a possible motive.
