A suspected DUI driver fleeing a Washington State Patrol trooper early Sunday led to a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 5 near South 336th Street that killed one person and injured three others, according to the Federal Way Police Department.
Federal Way police said they were asked to assist the Washington State Patrol at about 3:40 a.m. Sunday after a collision on southbound I-5 that also involved a trooper.
The preliminary investigation found that a trooper attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a vehicle traveling southbound on I-5 for suspected DUI. Police said the vehicle refused to stop and fled southbound for about 13 miles.
During the pursuit, the suspect vehicle struck an uninvolved vehicle traveling southbound, causing it to lose control and collide with one of the pursuing troopers’ vehicles, Federal Way police said.
One of the four people in the uninvolved vehicle died at the scene, police said. The other three people were treated at a local hospital for minor injuries.
Police said the driver of the suspect vehicle, a 25-year-old Kent man, was arrested for DUI, eluding, and vehicular homicide and will be booked into the King County Jail. Police did not identify him.
