A Clallam County sheriff’s deputy stopped a suspected DUI driver who authorities say turned into oncoming traffic during a pursuit that began in Sequim on Sunday.

Just after 10 a.m., an officer with the Sequim Police Department attempted to stop an erratic vehicle traveling northbound on Sequim Avenue. The driver, identified as a 39-year-old Port Angeles woman, failed to stop and drove at high speeds through the city.

Authorities said the woman drove recklessly through business parking lots and continued through Sequim to Highway 101, where she continued westbound. Sequim police determined there was probable cause to arrest her for driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

The vehicle pursuit was authorized by a Clallam County Sheriff’s supervisor and a Sequim Police supervisor, according to the sheriff’s office.

Authorities said the woman drove at high speed to a Carlsborg gas station before turning around and driving into a high volume of oncoming traffic, traveling eastbound into westbound lanes. Clallam County sheriff’s deputies responded to assist.

As the woman began driving into oncoming traffic, Sheriff’s Deputy Torri Middlekauff used her patrol vehicle to cut off the driver’s path and collided with the passenger side of her vehicle, disabling it, the release said.

Authorities said the woman then got out and tried to flee on foot, but Middlekauff chased her and arrested her without further incident. Sequim police took the woman into custody and began investigating suspected DUI and felony second-degree assault with a vehicle.

No injuries were reported. The woman was expected to be booked into the Clallam County Jail for DUI and second-degree assault, according to the sheriff’s office.
