One man is dead, and another is in custody after an hours-long standoff in unincorporated Pierce County following a deadly stabbing.
At 2:30 a.m. on Monday, a man’s girlfriend called 911 saying her boyfriend had been stabbed multiple times at a home near Bonney Lake.
When deputies arrived at a property in the 20200 block of 101st Street East, the victim was lying on the front lawn. He died from his injuries on the way to the hospital.
According to Pierce County Sheriff's Office (PCSO) spokesperson Deputy Carly Cappetto, the stabbing suspect barricaded himself inside a mobile home with two other people inside. SWAT officers responded and negotiated with the man for hours to persuade him to come out.
At one point, the suspect claimed to have explosives, but investigators determined he had access to none.
During the standoff, pepper balls, which irritate the eyes and can make it difficult to breathe, were fired into the home.
Eventually, the suspect surrendered to authorities and was taken into custody at around 7:30 a.m.
Cappetto said it was possible that there may have been a mental health component in the attack.
“He (the suspect) clearly is not safe to himself or others at this time,” she said.
Investigators are working to determine the circumstances that led up to the stabbing.
No one else was hurt.
