The 37-year-old was arrested on suspicion of felony eluding, first-degree driving with a suspended license, and obstruction.

A 37-year-old man was arrested after authorities said he fled from deputies in a vehicle, jumped fences, climbed onto rooftops and eventually tried to hide under a pool cover in Tacoma.

Pierce County Sheriff's Office deputies were working a multi-agency emphasis with the Puget Sound Auto Theft Task Force around 8:30 p.m. Aug. 13 when they spotted a vehicle near 72nd Street and Portland Avenue with an invalid registration, according to the sheriff's office.

Deputies developed reasonable suspicion that the vehicle could be stolen and attempted a traffic stop, but the driver sped away, according to the sheriff's office.

A sergeant decided to back off and allow the Washington State Patrol's airplane, Smokey, to track the vehicle from the air.

Authorities said the driver and a passenger eventually entered a neighborhood, abandoned the vehicle near the 7000 block of South M Street and fled on foot. Investigators later determined the vehicle was not stolen.

With the State Patrol aircraft tracking the driver from above, deputies said the man jumped fences, climbed onto rooftops and eventually entered a backyard.

Deputies said the man then attempted to hide in a pool underneath a pool cover.

According to the sheriff's office, deputies could hear the man breathing beneath the cover and repeatedly ordered him to come out, but he refused.

After about 20 minutes, deputies approached the pool and pulled the man out, according to the sheriff's office.

The 37-year-old was arrested on suspicion of felony eluding, first-degree driving with a suspended license, and obstruction.

The passenger also fled on foot, but the sheriff's office said deputies did not have probable cause to arrest that person.

The vehicle was impounded.
