A 29-year-old man was arrested after investigators said a driver fired a shot at another vehicle on state Route 900 in King County, shattering a window and leaving a bullet fragment lodged in a headrest.
At about 5 a.m. on July 22, Washington State Patrol communications received a 9-1-1 call from a victim who reported they had just been shot at by the driver of another vehicle on SR 900 near May Valley Road. The victim told troopers they were not injured.
When troopers contacted the victim, they saw the back window of the vehicle was shattered, and a bullet fragment was lodged in the headrest of the front passenger seat. A bullet casing was also found in the area where the shooting occurred.
The victim told investigators he was traveling eastbound on SR 900 near Duvall Avenue Northeast when a light-colored vehicle approached from behind at a high speed where two lanes merged into one, but was unable to pass. The victim said the vehicle followed very closely and, as it turned onto 164th Avenue Southeast, he heard one shot and the back window shattered.
The victim could not get a license plate number or see the driver, but provided details about the vehicle that investigators said would make it stand out.
WSP detectives later surveilled the area at the same time of day and identified a potential suspect vehicle and where the driver worked. Investigators said they used a search warrant for video footage and other investigative steps to establish probable cause to arrest the driver.
On Aug. 7, 2026, at about 1:30 p.m., the WSP SWAT team made a high-risk traffic stop as the man was leaving work and took him into custody without incident, WSP said. He was booked into the King County Jail for investigation of drive-by shooting and second-degree assault.
Investigators also served a search warrant on the vehicle and said they found a 9mm Canik 55 handgun in the center console. WSP said the gun will be tested to confirm whether it was used in the shooting.
