When the Seattle Seahawks kick off the regular season on Wednesday, Sept. 9, fans will also be treated to a special halftime show at Lumen Field.
Seattle rock legends Soundgarden will reunite with help from singer Taylor Momsen and Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready.
Founding member and lead guitarist Kim Thayil sat down with KOMO's Molly Shen ahead of the show. He shared his thoughts on performing in Seattle again, and discussed his new memoir, "A Screaming Life."
Kim and Molly talked about why now was the time to share his story, and the challenges of recounting the loss of friends like Soundgarden lead singer Chris Cornell and Nirvana's Kurt Cobain, as well as deaths in his family and the end of relationships. He discussed the birth of grunge, navigating the pitfalls of the rock and roll industry, and what he thinks of the music scene in Seattle today.
Thayil also talked about a new Soundgarden album that's on the way. The band worked with audio Cornell recorded before his death in 2017.
"It was very forensic in nature," Thayil described. "We kind of have to tear it all apart and kind of piece it back together. Spending a lot of time in the studio listening to the material is both -- it's a great pleasure. It presented a lot of enthusiasm, an opportunity for us, but it's also a little bit difficult. And you're constantly balancing the responsibility and duty towards the material and towards a beloved friend's work and our work together."
