A reported shooting in progress in Kelso led police to arrest a 38-year-old man accused of shooting his 72-year-old father with a pepper ball gun and fleeing the scene.
Kelso Police responded at 4:04 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 21 to the 1300 block of South 13th Avenue after a report that a man shot at the occupant of another car and then fled in a silver Ford F-150 passenger truck.
Officers found the victim, 72-year-old Warren Wakefield, with wounds to his head and chest.
Later that day, members of the public reported the location of the suspect vehicle in south Kelso. At about 8:30 p.m., officers arrived and confirmed it was the vehicle they were looking for.
Police contacted the driver and a passenger identified as the suspected shooter, 38-year-old Buddy Wakefield, who police said is the son of the victim.
Police said Buddy confessed to shooting his father with a Byrna pepper ball gun and then fleeing as a passenger in the silver F-150 driven by his roommate.
Buddy was arrested and taken to jail, where he was booked for second-degree assault domestic violence.
