More than 300 support staff in the Shoreline School District could go on strike Monday if their union and the district don't reach a new contract agreement by Sunday night.
Members of the Shoreline Educational Support Professionals Association voted overwhelmingly Thursday to authorize their bargaining team to call a strike beginning Monday, Sept. 14, according to the union.
The strike would begin if the two sides fail to reach an agreement by 8 p.m. Sunday.
SESPA and the district have been negotiating since April. The union represents more than 300 district employees, including paraeducators, nurses, health assistants, secretarial and technical staff, crossing guards and security staff.
The union says it is seeking overall wage increases that would bring its members' pay in line with neighboring school districts, with a particular focus on increasing pay for paraeducators.
Negotiations are expected to continue, and SESPA said its bargaining team is available to meet throughout the weekend.
Teachers and other certificated staff are represented by the Shoreline Education Association. SEA members voted Wednesday to support SESPA members if they go on strike, according to the union.
SESPA members plan to gather at Shoreline Park at 11 a.m. Saturday to make picket signs that would be used if a strike begins.
The union is affiliated with the Washington Education Association and National Education Association.
