A 47-year-old man wanted in connection with the stabbing death of a woman in Oregon was arrested Wednesday after an armed standoff with law enforcement in Sedro-Woolley, authorities said.
Sedro-Woolley police were dispatched to the 800 block of state Route 20 for a welfare check after a man called 911 and made nonsensical statements to a dispatcher, according to police.
The caller identified himself and later called back, threatening himself and others and saying he was armed.
Earlier in the day, local law enforcement had received information about the man from the Lane County Sheriff’s Office in Oregon.
He was wanted in connection with a violent felony investigation and was believed to be armed with several firearms, authorities said. Another person connected to the incident had been detained outside Skagit County.
Sedro-Woolley police officers and Skagit County sheriff’s deputies established a perimeter around a business in the 800 block of state Route 20.
Members of the Skagit County Crisis Negotiations Team and North Cascades Regional SWAT Team also responded.
Officers could see the suspect carrying a shotgun, police said. The business was locked down and later evacuated, leaving the suspect isolated in its beer garden.
Authorities attempted to communicate with the man, who tried several times to climb over the beer garden fence but initially remained inside. He eventually climbed over the fence and encountered officers maintaining the perimeter.
Sedro-Woolley officers and Skagit County deputies took him into custody without incident.
The arrest followed an investigation that began earlier Wednesday in Lane County, Oregon.
Lane County Sheriff’s deputies and detectives responded to a residence in a South River Road neighborhood to conduct a welfare check on a 44-year-old woman based on information received from an out-of-state caller.
The woman was found dead at the residence. Authorities said she died from multiple stab wounds.
Investigators quickly identified a 47-year-old man as a suspect and, with assistance from the Lane County District Attorney’s Office, obtained a warrant for his arrest on a murder charge.
Lane County sheriff’s detectives then worked with authorities in Skagit County after the suspect was located in Washington.
The victim’s family has been notified, according to the Lane County Sheriff’s Office.
The investigation remains ongoing, but authorities said there is no threat to the public and all people associated with the investigation have been accounted for.
The Lane County Sheriff’s Office thanked Oregon State Police, the Lane County District Attorney’s Office, the Sedro-Woolley Police Department and the Skagit County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance.
