Seattle Public Schools and the city of Seattle will hold a news conference Tuesday to celebrate the availability of free breakfast and lunch for every student in the district.
The event is scheduled for 2:15 p.m. at Montlake Elementary School and will highlight the partnership that expanded free meal access across the district.
Under the program, every SPS student can receive one free breakfast and one free lunch each school day.
Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson and SPS Superintendent Ben Shuldiner are expected to speak about the city's investment in universal free meals and the impact of expanded access on students.
Aaron Smith, the district's director of culinary services, is expected to discuss nutrition and menu innovation, while Assistant Superintendent of School Operations Marni Campbell will address the Child Nutrition Eligibility & Education Benefit application and the importance of families completing it.
The district said the event will also emphasize how student feedback can help shape new recipes and increase interest and participation in the school meal program.
Following the news conference, students will participate in a food demonstration and taste testing of new recipes for the school meal program.
The news conference is scheduled to run from 2:15 to 2:40 p.m., with the food demonstration and taste testing beginning afterward.
The news conference will also be streamed live on the SPSTV YouTube channel.
