A man was arrested Wednesday after police said he twice tried to attack his roommate with a hatchet at an apartment building in north Seattle.

The first incident was reported about 7 a.m. at an apartment building in the 8700 block of Greenwood Avenue North, according to the Seattle Police Department.

A 46-year-old man told officers his 37-year-old roommate had tried to attack him with a hatchet. The suspect fled before officers arrived.

Police told the victim not to return to the apartment, but he went back inside, police said. The suspect later returned and again tried to attack the victim with a hatchet.

The victim called 911 again at about 3 p.m. Officers found him uninjured in the building lobby.

When officers went to the fourth-floor apartment, the suspect had barricaded himself inside, police said. A hostage negotiator and SWAT officers responded.

Shortly after 7 p.m., officers used a gas agent while attempting to enter the apartment and took the suspect into custody without injuries, according to police. The suspect was in custody by 7:30 p.m., police said.
