Seahawks Set Initial 53-Man RosterRenton, Wash. – The Seahawks made the following roster transactions this afternoon:Acquired via Trade with the L.A. Chargers:C

The Seattle Seahawks acquired cornerback Avery Smith in a trade with the Los Angeles Chargers and announced a series of roster moves as they set their initial 53-man roster Sunday afternoon, the team said.

Seattle released nine vested veterans, including cornerback Trevon Diggs, running back Velus Jones Jr. and tight end Nick Vannett. Safety D’Anthony Bell, tackle Bobby Hart, cornerback Noah Igbinoghene, safety Rodney Thomas II and wide receiver Cody White also had their contracts terminated.

Under NFL rules, a player with at least four accrued seasons is considered a vested veteran. Unlike younger players who are waived, vested veterans released after the trade deadline are not subject to the waiver process and immediately become free agents who can sign with another team.

The Seahawks also waived 26 players, including rookie wide receivers Emmanuel Henderson Jr. and Ricky White III, defensive end Aidan Hubbard, linebacker Jared Ivey and running back Jacardia Wright. Players who are waived can be claimed by another NFL team during the league’s waiver period. If they clear waivers, they become free agents and may be eligible to return to Seattle’s practice squad or sign elsewhere.

Seattle waived/injured linebackers Power Echols and Aaron Smith, tackle Amari Kight and fullback Brock Lampe. That designation means the players are subject to waiver claims despite their injuries. If they clear waivers, the Seahawks can place them on injured reserve, negotiate an injury settlement or take another roster action.

Running back Zach Charbonnet was placed on the reserve/physically unable to perform list, while wide receiver Irvin Charles was placed on injured reserve and designated for return. Neither player counts toward the initial 53-man active roster. Players placed on the reserve/PUP list or injured reserve with a return designation must miss at least the first four games of the regular season before they can be activated.
